Bulldog breeds are not new to dog owners all over the world. They are well-loved and cared for by their parents – mostly because they adapt well to different living conditions and lifestyles. History Of The Boston Bulldog
The actual history of this dog breed is not well documented, hence, the reason why the American Kernel Club is yet to give it recognition. As a result, we have quite a few versions. Some, however, believe that the Boston Bulldog is a crossbreed between the Terriers and English Bulldog.
Though originally bred in England, the dog was sold to different owners and was eventually brought to the Boston Area – from where it got its name. Some also believe that the Olde Boston Bulldogge was the original version of this breed before it was brought over to Boston and eventually renamed.
Differences Between The Boston Terrier And Boston Bulldog
Both dog breeds actually share an ancestral lineage which gives them some recognizable similarities, however, there are a few noticeable differences between them when observed from close quarters:
- Size
The Boston Bulldog is sturdier/muscled than the Terrier; this brawny pup looks and appears bigger when placed side by side with the Terrier.
- Weight
The Boston Bulldog weighs between 20 and 45 pounds at full maturity while the Terrier at the same stage of life weighs far lower between 12 and 25 pounds.
- Height
This may not be too noticeable to undiscerning eyes, but the Terrier may be a bit taller than the Bulldog, probably by a few inches.
- Colour
When it is about colour variation, the Boston Bulldog comes in more colour variants than the Terrier.

There is not much information out there about the Boston Bulldog dog breed, however, this unique breed has been analyzed by experts who came up with the following characteristics:
Health
The Boston Bulldog breed does not have too many health complications and issues, but the few it has can be dangerous if the owner isn’t observant or they are not well looked after when these health issues arise.
This dog does not do well during heat period at all, thus, leaving them locked up in a hothouse, enclosure, car, etc, can become catastrophic for them.
If you live in a hot region, once the temperature starts climbing, cool down your dog quickly with a cool water bath. Watch out for eyes and heart issues, also, they are prone to suffer heatstroke. The pup tends to fart a lot, as it takes in a lot of air while eating, drinking, or running.
Training
The Boston Bulldog requires training very early in its life to prevent it from turning into a destructive and disobedient dog at the adult stage, besides, it is easier for puppies to imbibe good behavior than for adult dogs to change from bad to good demeanor.
Train your dog to respond to instructions and not to be overprotective over its food and water. Also, expose your canine friend to other dogs and situations for it to be well-mannered, as well as properly socialized. Above all, remember the treats and praises, and always reward your dog’s good behaviors with praises, petting, and occasional feasts, while lovingly chiding it for misbehaving.
Appearance
The Boston Bulldog is a small/medium-sized dog mix with a deep chest and a well-muscled body. The head is wide, comparable to that of the English bulldog, with a broad black nose and a short muzzle, sporting folds around the mouth. It has a shiny coat with short hair and the ears are rather thin and folded at the back. The eyes are a bit dark and are set in their socket.
Grooming
The Boston Bulldog is not a heavy shedder, but it does shed moderately. You should bathe your dog at least every other week and trim its nails while you’re at it. Brushing your beloved pooch regularly is highly recommended as it would not only get rid of dead hair follicles but also promote the growth of new ones and aid effective blood circulation under the skin. Do not forget to brush your dog’s teeth regularly to prevent periodontal disease.
Exercise
This dog (just like its parent breeds) is a high-energy dog as a puppy, and thus, will not do well in confinement at this stage of life. Daily exercise and engaging activities are recommended for this dog in the early stages of its life. Take your Boston Bulldog for walks around the neighborhood and if you live in an apartment complex, put your dog on a treadmill to burn off all the pent-up energy.
Temperament
This is a very friendly, intelligent, calm, courageous, and most times a very amusing dog. It is a quick learner that loves to learn from and please its owner at all times. If well socialized as a puppy, the Boston Bulldog will do very well around other dogs and humans. They possess an amiable personality and are not classified as a dangerous breed at all. In fact, if you indulge this furball, you may likely end up with a couch potato or a lap dog.
